The pasta market in Argentina: strong demand and an excellent reputation
UIFRA is Argentina’s only national chamber of pasta producers, founded in 1902. It currently represents the main players and most of the local operators in the industry.
It is distinguished by its strong networking and its participation in the most relevant forums of the agribusiness chain. It specializes in food law, labor issues, media relations, and market analysis. Juan Airoldes began his career in this sector at a medium-sized company dedicated to the production of laminated pasta.
He has also been actively involved in the non-profit sector, working in Caritas and the Argentine Episcopal Conference, the National Assembly of Catholic Bishops. In 2012, he joined UIFRA, where he was responsible for public relations and government affairs. He has served as president of this organization since 2017.
How is the Argentine pasta industry structured?
“In Argentina, we have a modern and diverse pasta sector, with three distinct groups of companies. The first group comprises the leading companies, which operate to the highest standards and are able to compete globally. This group consists of five companies with a production capacity of between 5,000 and 15,000 tons per month each.
The second group includes numerous small and medium-sized, family-owned factories, primarily focused on laminated pasta and egg pasta. This market enjoys strong demand in Argentina and a high reputation. This group comprises around fifteen companies with a production capacity of 3,000 tons per month in total. Finally, the third group specializes in other high-value market niches, such as lasagna, gluten-free pasta, protein or high fiber pasta, among others”.
