Enhancing ancient grain varieties to strengthen Sicily’s cereal‑growing vocation
Alessia Montani is a Supreme Court lawyer specializing in administrative and environmental law, with a strong commitment to defending environmental rights.
She is the founder and president of the AVASIM Consortium, an organization dedicated to recovering ancient crops and cultures of Italy and the Mediterranean, and of the startup MAMA.SEEDS, focused on creating an agro‑food supply chain for ancient seeds. She conceived and created the Parco dell’Anima, an open‑air museum that brings contemporary art into dialogue with ancient seeds and aims to become a global seed bank for educational and outreach purposes, dedicated to preserving agricultural biodiversity.
For our magazine, she wished to illustrate the history and goals of these projects, with a particular focus on Sicily’s grain‑to‑pasta supply chain, as the region pursues PDO recognition for its pasta.
